Riot Games has officially brought Skirmish to matchmaking in ‘Valorant‘ Patch 12.03. Previously only available in custom game lobbies, the mode now supports a dedicated 2v2 queue for a limited time. It strips the game down to its most basic form with no abilities, no economy, and no objectives.
The concept is simple. Two players face two players in compact arenas built entirely around gunplay. The first team to win 10 rounds takes the match. It launched on February 17, 2026, and has quickly become a popular warm-up tool and a refreshing break from the intensity of ranked play.
How Does Skirmish: 2v2 Work?

Skirmish is a round-based mode designed around pure mechanical skill. Each round, both teams spawn with Heavy Armor and unlimited credits. This means every weapon in the armory is available at all times with no financial consequence from previous rounds.
The first round features a 15-second buy phase. Every round after that gives players just 3 seconds to select their loadout before the action begins. There is no Spike to plant or defuse. The only objective is to eliminate the opposing duo. Agent abilities are completely disabled, and agents are assigned randomly.
Players can queue solo and get matched with a random partner. They can also duo-queue with a friend for more coordinated play. The mode sits in the standard Play menu alongside other matchmaking options while it remains featured.

Matches take place on purpose-built Skirmish maps rather than the standard ‘Valorant‘ map pool. Three maps are randomly selected for each match: Skirmish A, Skirmish B, and Skirmish C. All three are compact arenas designed for fast, close-range engagements with very little downtime.
What Makes Each Skirmish Map Different?

Skirmish A features a tight central corridor with side angles. It is the smallest of the three and works perfectly for intense 1v1 and 2v2 duels. Positioning and crosshair placement matter more than anything on this map.
Skirmish B is slightly larger and introduces elevation changes along with additional corners. This gives players more tactical options and allows for varied approaches to each round. It rewards players who can adapt their angles quickly.
Skirmish C rounds out the pool as another compact arena built for constant action. All three maps remove the complexity of standard ‘Valorant‘ maps and ensure that every round starts with combat almost immediately.
Is Skirmish Better Than Deathmatch In ‘Valorant’?

‘Valorant‘ already has Deathmatch for warming up, but Skirmish functions differently in key ways. Deathmatch is a free-for-all mode with no round structure. Players simply rack up kills until someone hits the target score.
Skirmish keeps the round-based format that defines ‘Valorant‘ as a game. Each round must be won individually, which creates pressure closer to what players feel in competitive matches. It rewards duo coordination rather than solo fragging.

Skirmish does not affect competitive rank in any way. It is purely a separate mode for practice, fun, and sharpening mechanics. Playing one to three matches before jumping into ranked has already become a popular routine in the community.
