Nioh 3: How To Complete The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth?

Nioh 3’s Warring States Era is full of Myths that have sent the players across the massive open world in search of rewards as they complete the multiple side quests. Of these, the Great Shogun of the Heian Era serves as one of the more interesting entries, blending deep lore with combat encounters.

Tokugawa Ieyasu remains the center of this myth, who is on a quest to seek spiritual protection from a former shogun as things get rougher for him. While easier compared to some of the later myths, it still requires the typical combination of masterful boss fights and a bit of caution that has become a trademark of the series.

Getting To The Temple And Defeating Onryoki

The player first gets to unlock this myth during the main mission of the Battle of Saigagake, right after Ii Naotora opens the gate to Saigagake. The myth will soon appear on the mission log after this, and you can head to the Hamamatsu Castle, where Ieyasu will be waiting for you on the top floor.

Once reached, the player will reach a mission to deliver a candle dish offering at Lake Sanaru in a temple dedicated to the spirit of former shogun Minamoto no Yorimoto. Sometimes the dialogues may not appear immediately, so you can simply open the progress tab and press the spacebar to prioritize the mission.

From there on, the player is tasked with following the map, which eventually leads him to Onryoki. The demon guards the path to the temple behind an energy barrier. The only way to move forward is to defeat the creature. However, it is nearly impossible to defeat Onryoki.

Armed with lethal slam attacks with clear wind-ups, Onryoki’s Burst Attack drains your health points in a blink, so timing your own Burst Break is the only way to create damage windows. The demon always rears back for his double-handed hammering strike, so you need to maintain the gap and immediately rush with your Living Artifacts and Soul Core abilities to burn through his health bar.

Inside The Temple And What Comes Next

After Onryoki goes down, the barrier lifts. Loot the corpse on the ground floor, then drop through the large hole. Follow the staircase down and use Enko to traverse the Spirit Vein. In the final chamber, find the small offering altar in front of six Jizo statues. Interact with it to place the Candle Dish.

The Six Jizo statue will ask you to make an offering, but this is actually a Mujine Yokai in disguise who attacks when you offer gold. The Mujine fight is much less demanding than Onryoki, so dispatch it quickly.

After the fake Jizo is dealt with, pray at the real Six Jizo to earn a bonus 50 Jizo Merit before leaving. Return to Hamamatsu Castle Keep and speak with Ieyasu to complete the myth. The rewards include a Mikazuki Munechika Ninja Sword and one Ninja’s Lock.

The Mikazuki Munechika is one of the five greatest swords of Japan, forged during the Heian period by master swordsmith Sanjo Kokaji Munechika. It’s a strong pickup for anyone running a Ninja build. The Ninja’s Locks help unlock additional Ninjutsu skills in the progression tree.

This is the 16th of 39 total Myths in ‘Nioh 3,’ and completing all of them unlocks the Answering to the People trophy. Players should tackle this one right after finishing the Headaches quest, since both originate from Hamamatsu Castle and can be knocked out back-to-back.
