In ‘Ghost of Yotei,’ the “Find a Way Into the Forest” puzzle is one of the most difficult challenges in the Kitsune questline. In the puzzle, players have to search for the hidden fox statues and symbols around the area.
Similar to all of the other Kitsune puzzles around the Teshio Ridge, this puzzle also tests players’ knowledge of the cipher, the fox statues, and their sense of symmetry to an extent. For players who have been stuck trying to unlock the gate into the forest, this is exactly what they need to do.
Understanding the “Find a Way Into the Forest” Puzzle in ‘Ghost of Yotei’
This puzzle takes place far into the Kitsune questline after the pedestal and lantern puzzles. Players will find three fox statues in front of a blocked-off path leading into the woods. At least one of the three statues will be lying down, one will be sitting, and one will have its right paw up, which can all be turned into a proper position to continue.

If players have unlocked the cipher earlier in the quest, they can use the touch pad to look that up. However, players can still solve the riddle without the cipher as well and follow the orientation of the statues.
Solving the “Find a Way Into the Forest” Puzzle
Players can see three fox statues right after entering the woods — one of them on the left, one in the center, and one on the right. Take some mental notes about the poses before moving any of the three foxes. To solve the puzzle, use this configuration:
- Left Fox (lying down) – Turn it to the right.
- Middle Fox (sitting) – Turn it backwards so that it is staring away from.
- Right Fox (raised right paw) – Turn it to the left.
All of these alignments correspond to the clues near the area, such as the markings under the bridge and the symbols denoted on stones.

After adjusting all three foxes to the designated position, the pathway behind them will be unlocked. Now, move forward, but be careful, as the rest of the course with snow is littered with traps and death pits. The clue for the right path will be near another fox statue. Go to the right of the first statue and see left around the next rock in the right direction.
By aligning the fox statues correctly – left to right, backward, and left – open the forest gate and continue Atsu’s journey through the Kitsune’s domain. Once players get a feel for the Kitsune’s logic, these puzzles become as rewarding as they are devious.
