React, a ‘Counter-Strike 2’ skin creator, got paid $35,000 from Valve for his Desert Eagle skin in the Dead Hand Collection. That is a flat fee. No royalties, no percentage of case sales, just $35,000 and done. Valve set up this new payment system back in December of last year, where every accepted weapon skin pays out $35,000 if the creator agrees to the terms.
The old system worked completely differently. Skin creators used to get a cut every time someone opened a case with their skin in it, so the more popular the case, the more money they made. Some of those older creators walked away with way more than $35,000 through that setup.
React Says He Is Not Mad About The $35,000

React posted about it on X and said he is happy with the money. But he also said he spent six years of his free time submitting skins to the Workshop before Valve accepted one. He made it clear that what he got paid is not the same as what other creators got paid under the royalty system.
That is what started the whole debate online. People looked at the $35,000 and immediately started comparing it to what the old workshop contributors earned, and the gap between the two is apparently huge.
React went back on X after the $35,000 thing blew up and said he was not mad about the payment. But he did push back on people who kept commenting on it without understanding what six years of getting rejected looks like.
He said a lot of his friends got their skins into the game through the old system, and their payouts were nothing like his. If people knew the actual difference in the numbers, he said, they would see the whole thing differently.

He posted again after that, saying he was tired of saying the same thing over and over. But people keep boiling it down to just the dollar amount and ignoring everything else. Getting a skin accepted into ‘Counter-Strike 2’ takes years for most artists, and that part of the story never gets brought up when everyone is busy arguing about whether $35,000 is fair or not.
Other Creators Are Split On Whether $35,000 Is Fair

The ‘Counter-Strike 2’ community has been going back and forth on this. One creator said anyone who thinks $35,000 is fair has no idea how much work goes into getting a skin accepted, and that a lot of artists spend years trying and never get in at all.
But another artist said the opposite. Getting $35,000 for two art pieces is rare in graphic design, and most people working in that field would take it without a second thought.

Valve has never said anything publicly about what creators made under the old royalty system. The $35,000 flat fee was locked in as of December last year, and that is the deal going forward for anyone whose skin gets selected. As of now, nobody knows if Valve is going to adjust that number at some point or if $35,000 is just what it is from here on out, regardless of how much money the case ends up bringing in.
