Former Rockstar Dev Reveals How GTA 4 Mission Served As Blueprint For GTA 5

The former audio designer at Rockstar, Rob Carr, recently sat down with YouTuber KIWI TALKZ for an interview and dropped some interesting thoughts on how older ‘GTA‘ games have quietly shaped the newer ones. According to Carr, the Three Leaf Clover mission from ‘GTA 4‘ is where a lot of what players saw in ‘GTA 5‘ actually started. He also said there are features sitting in ‘GTA 5‘ right now that most people overlook, but Rockstar is probably going to turn them into major systems in ‘GTA 6.

Three Leaf Clover is a bank robbery mission in ‘GTA 4‘ where the storylines of Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz, and Luis Lopez all cross during a heist at the Bank of Liberty. The whole thing ends in a chase through the streets and subway tunnels of Liberty City. Luis Lopez, who went on to star in The Ballad of Gay Tony, shows up in the mission as a hostage inside the bank.

According to Carr, the fact that Niko, Johnny, and Luis all ended up in the same mission is what eventually turned into the three-protagonist system in ‘GTA 5.‘ “All three characters connect in the middle,” he said. “Retrospectively, looking back now, it’s easy to see how that’s the blueprint of the three-player system in GTA 5. Only when you look back at that are you like, ‘oh, yeah. It’s actually really quite obvious.’

GTA 5‘s multi-protagonist setup was one of the biggest reasons the game felt different from anything else in the series, and ‘GTA 6‘ appears to be going in a similar direction with Jason and Lucia as the two leads.

It is also worth noting that Three Leaf Clover was a heist. That concept ended up becoming one of the biggest parts of ‘GTA 5‘s story mode and carried over into ‘GTA Online‘ as well. With ‘GTA 6‘ reportedly taking Bonnie and Clyde-style influences, it would make sense for heists to play a big role again.

Carr also talked about how Rockstar tends to plant ideas in their games that do not seem like much at first but become central to the next release. Carr said, “There will be things that they have in GTA 5 that they will have in GTA 6 that you will look at and go, ‘ugh, we should have seen that coming. Oh, that’s really clever.‘” Carr added that it would shock him if Rockstar did not take at least one thing from ‘GTA 5‘ and turn it into either a core gameplay loop or a plot device in the next game.

As of now, November 19, 2026, is the confirmed launch date for ‘GTA 6.‘ Take-Two stood by that date again last month and mentioned that official marketing would ramp up over the summer. There have been delays before, but this time the date seems to be sticking.
