Rockstar Games Reportedly Using Fake Leaks To Protect GTA 6

Rockstar Games is reportedly taking extreme measures to secure Grand Theft Auto 6 following years of numerous leaks. According to an insider, Reece Reilly, also known as Kiwi Talkz, the studio is intentionally spreading fake information internally to identify potential leakers. Reilly compared the current level of secrecy at Rockstar to “Area 51,” noting that internal communication regarding the game is almost entirely locked down.

He claimed that they are using the famous “canary trap” technique. This method involves giving a different person slightly different versions of the same information. This tactic was recently rumored to have been used by Valve in late 2025 to protect ‘Half-Life 3.

Leaks have been a major issue in the journey of ‘GTA 6.’ From gameplay leaks back in 2022 to actual trailer surfacing online a few hours earlier on the day of release, Rockstar Games has been dealing with these a lot.

The primary goal of a “canary trap” is to identify a potential source of the leaks. It will also prevent employees from sharing information, as the information they have can be traced back to them. However, this does not help Rockstar Games against the hackers and contractors responsible.
